Kubuntu is very similar to the Ubuntu Desktop Edition. The main difference is that Kubuntu uses the KDE graphical environment instead of GNOME (which is what Ubuntu uses).
Usually which graphical environment to use is a user preference as the applications used are very similar. You can also install both GNOME and KDE on any Ubuntu/Kubuntu machine, the only downside being the increase in diskspace and memory usage.
