Ubuntu Flavours

Ubuntu is available in three different flavours.

Ubuntu

Standard Ubuntu

The standard Ubuntu is the msot popular. This edition is bundled with GNOME, a piece of software that controls the windows and graphical environment that you use within Ubuntu. GNOME is very flexible and allows you to edit the way it looks an behaves. There are hundreds of pre-made themes available for GNOME. Take a look at GNOME Look for a database of themes that you can download for free.

The standard Ubuntu package is our best-selling product and is recommended by us.

Kubuntu

Standard Kubuntu

Kubuntu is essentially the same as Ubuntu but it is bundled with KDE, which is a very popular alternative to GNOME. KDE stands for the K Desktop Environment.

Similar to Ubuntu, Kubuntu release updates every 6 months and provide 18 months of free security updates. Also, just like Ubuntu, it is bundled with all of the software that you should ever need, all for free.

Similar to GNOME, KDE can be very well themed. There are hundreds of themes available for KDE, with more being added every day. You can even make your own. For more information and a large database of these free themes take a look at KDE Look.

Xubuntu

Standard Kubuntu

Xubuntu is again very similar to the Ubuntu and Kubuntu flavours. Xubuntu uses the Xfce desktop environment, as opposed to Ubuntus GNOME and Kubuntus KDE. Xfce is known to use less system resources than GNOME and KDE, because of this it is perfect for older computers, systems with limited resources, laptops, netbooks or very high-efficiency workstations.

Xubuntu comes with all of the software that most users will need. Just with all of the other flavours users of Xubuntu are able to search, download and install new software quickly and easily, and of course for free.
